Smit Named Indians Minor League Player of the Week

(CLEVELAND, OH) - The Cleveland Indians today announced that Lake County Captains outfielder JASON SMIT has been named the Indians Minor League Player of the Week for the week of April 10-16. Smit becomes the first recipient of the newly created honor which recognizes an individual performance from within the Indians Player Development System. The Player of the Week award will be announced each Tuesday thru the end of the minor league baseball season with all players from the Tribe's minor league affiliates eligible for the weekly award.

Over the past week, Smit, 21, batted .464 (13-28) with 8 runs scored, 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 7RBI in 7 games as he posted a OPS of 1.830 (.545 OBP, .821SLG). Thus far this year he is hitting .455 (20-44) with 9 runs scored, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 2HR and 9RBI in 11 games for the Captains.

A native of Western Australia, Smit was signed by the Indians as a minor league free agent in July of 2006. In 2007, he was named the "Youth Player of the Year" by the Australian Baseball Federation. Smit originally began his professional career as a shortstop before being moved to the outfield prior to the 2009 season.
