Speedster Earns Postseason Honors
Augusta, GA - Augusta GreenJackets outfielder Shawn Payne was named today to the South Atlantic League's Postseason All-Star Team as part of an announcement made by league president Eric Krupa this morning.
Earning the nod as a utility outfielder, Payne was the only GreenJacket from this year's team to earn the honor. With a .311 batting average entering play tonight, Payne boasts the sixth-best mark in the South Atlantic League and has consistently been a part of the league's top-ten in hitting for most of the summer. His 52 stolen bases are second to only Lexington's Delino DeShields Jr. and tops among players still in the league, since DeShields Jr. has since been promoted. Those 52 steals are also tops among all Giants minor leaguers.
In addition, the .311 batting average is tops on a team hitting just .242 this year. Payne's 56 RBI's entering play tonight are a team-high while his 19 doubles are the fourth-most on the team.
Highlights of the full team include the selections for Most Outstanding Pitcher (Mike Foltynewicz - Lexington Legends), Most Outstanding Major League Prospect (Gregory Polanco - West Virginia Power), and Most Valuable Player (Matt Skole - Hagerstown Suns). The All-Star team was voted on by a compilation of field managers, coaches, broadcasters and sports writer's from the league's 14 teams.
