Storm announce 2013 coaching staff

November 20, 2012

Lake Elsinore, CA - The Lake Elsinore Storm, in partnership with the San Diego Padres, announce that Shawn Wooten will return as Manager in 2013. The 20th season of Storm baseball begins on April 4 against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Along with Wooten, David Newhan returns as hitting coach and Brian Lawrence will begin his first season coaching in the Padres organization as the Storm Pitching Coach.

In his first season with the Storm, Wooten led the team to its eighth consecutive California League playoff appearance with an overall record of 69-71. Under Wooten's guidance, five Storm players were mid-season all-star selections and three were named post-season all-stars. Wooten played with the Storm in 1998 and would go onto win a World Series title with the Anaheim Angels in 2002.

Newhan will begin his third season in Lake Elsinore and his second full season as the team's hitting coach. Newhan, after starting in the California League, spent eight years in the big leagues with five different teams, hitting .253 with 23 home runs and 120 RBI.

Joining the staff this year will be pitching coach Brian Lawrence, who made his professional coaching debut last season as a pitching coach in the independent Frontier League. Over parts of five Major League seasons with the Padres, the right-hander went 49-61 with a 4.10 ERA (426 ER/934.0 IP) in 162 games (146 starts). He finished his major league career with the Mets in 2007.

Athletic Trainer Will Sinon returns for his seventh consecutive season with the Storm and 16th in the Padres organization. Sinon has worked across all levels in the organization and has been named athletic trainer of the year in multiple leagues, including the California League in 2008. Strength coach Eric Wood returns for a second consecutive season as a member of the Storm staff.

Opening Day at The Diamond is on Thursday, April 11 when the Storm host the Inland Empire 66ers. For more information on tickets and the upcoming season call 951-245-4487 or visit stormbaseball.com.
