Sunday to be Super for TinCaps' Food Boss

Lehn working Super Bowl for first time
February 5, 2010
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Indianapolis Colts fans won't be the only Hoosiers in Miami for this weekend's Super Bowl. Fort Wayne TinCaps Director of Food and Beverage Bill Lehn will work behind the scenes as a concessions manager on Super Sunday.

Lehn is one of about 100 managers hired to work the game. He expects to oversee 7-8 concession stands along with several portable carts and bars on the stadium's upper level.

Sunday shapes up as a long day for the food and beverage managers; Lehn said he will be ready to work at around 6 a.m. The game starts at 6:25 p.m. and may not end until 10 p.m.

While Sunday's game is Lehn's first Super Bowl, he is no stranger to working large events. He was on the food and beverage staff for college football's Orange Bowl and worked at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium for the 1988 MLB All-Star Game and the 1990 World Series. During his tenure at the Boston Garden, Lehn worked the Stanley Cup and NBA Finals.

"I've always wanted to work a Super Bowl and I finally got the opportunity," Lehn said. "This is the biggest sporting event in the country. It's a thrill to be a part of it."

Lehn is also using the experience to collect ideas which could improve food and event service at Parkview Field.

"We're always looking for ways to improve the fan experience," Lehn said. "Being here and talking shop with some of the best people in the business can do nothing but help. I'll tell you one thing I won't be bringing back: the Super Bowl prices!"

In-stadium beer prices at the Super Bowl are expected to be in the $10 range.

The TinCaps plan to keep their concession prices affordable in 2010. In addition, Monday Family Feast nights at Parkview Field will feature selected items for $1. Thirsty Thursday makes its return with $1 beers and $2 drink specials.

Parkview Field holds five concession stands, 18 portable carts and six picnic areas. Lehn heads the TinCaps' full-service food and beverage staff which is on duty for all baseball games and special events.
