Syracuse tops Tides Monday, 8-2

The Syracuse Chiefs pounded out seven extra-base hits as they knocked off Norfolk 8-2 Monday night.

Syracuse collected five RBI doubles and two triples in the contest, with Kory Casto leading the charge with four hits and two runs batted in. Mike Morse added three hits for the Chiefs, who pulled even with the Tides in the IL Wild Card chase, 3.5 games back of Durham and Gwinnett.

Brandon Snyder had three singles and an RBI to lead Norfolk's offense, while Brandon Pinckney singled twice and scored a run. Snyder has now hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games to up his batting average from .200 to .258.

Jake Arrieta (3-5) suffered the loss for the Tides, yielding four runs on eight hits and two walks in five innings of work. Arrieta struck out four in the contest, but needed 97 pitches to get through his outing.

Dennis Sarfate tossed a scoreless inning of relief for Norfolk in his fifth outing on major league rehab.

The Tides will wrap up their homestand on Tuesday afternoon with a 12:15 contest against the Chiefs. Andy Mitchell (9-3, 4.56) will toe the rubber for Norfolk against southpaw Ross Detwiler (0-1, 3.18).
