Teheran notches first Triple-A win

It took three starts, but Julio Teheran earned his first Triple-A win on Wednesday.

Teheran allowed three runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and struck out five over 6 1/3 innings as the Gwinnett Braves cruised to an 8-4 victory over the Norfolk Tides.

Making his longest start of the season, MLB.com's No. 10 prospect struggled early, allowing a pair of runs in the first inning. After Ryan Adams reached on an error by first baseman Shawn Bowman, Teheran surrendered a double to Brandon Snyder and an RBI groundout to Nolan Reimold. Josh Bell followed with a run-scoring double before Teheran plunked Nick Green with two outs. The 20-year-old right-hander got Brendan Harris to fly out, limiting the damage.

Teheran settled down and retired 11 straight at one point. He was chased with one out in the seventh after allowing back-to-back doubles to Michael Hernandez and Tyler Henson and a single to Blake Davis, leaving with an 8-3 lead.

Teheran was relieved by Major League veteran Scott Proctor, who fanned Adams and retired Snyder on a fly ball.

Signed by the Braves as a non-drafted free agent in July 2007, Teheran was 9-8 with a 2.59 ERA in 24 starts at three levels last season. He struck out 159 over 142 2/3 innings and held opponents to a .208 batting average. The native of Colombia did not figure in the decision in his International League debut on April 8, despite yielding a run on two hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Wilkin Ramirez homered and drove in two runs, while Diory Hernandez slugged a two-run blast for Gwinnett. Jose Constanza contributed three hits and two RBIs.

Bell also homered for the Tides, who have lost five of seven.
