Tenth Inning to run at Parkview Field

Screening to benefit Community Harvest Food Bank
September 21, 2010
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - WFWA PBS39 and the Fort Wayne TinCaps will offer a public screening of the first episode of Ken Burns' THE TENTH INNING on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 7:00pm. The program itself will be seen on Parkview Field's giant high-resolution video board, a first for both the TinCaps and PBS39. Seating will be available in Parkview Field's main seating bowl.

Admission to this public event is free with the donation of a non-perishable canned food item to Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana. Barrels to place donation into will be available at the entrance to Parkview field prior to and during this event. Concessions will also be available for purchase during the screening of THE TENTH INNING. The ballpark will be open to the public at 6:00pm for seating.

THE TENTH INNING picks up where Burns' "nine-inning" award winning miniseries BASEBALL left off in 1994, when the original miniseries premiered. Burns and co-director Lynn Novick update the series and tells the tumultuous story of our national pastime up to the present day.

The episode that will be seen Tuesday September 28 will be "The Top Of The Tenth," looking at the state of the game when, in 1994, the national pastime faces its worst crisis in 70 years when a bitter and prolonged strike forces the cancellation of the World Series, infuriating fans dismayed by the athletes and teams they once worshipped. Baseball has to rebuild. And rebuild it does, with new stadiums, an infusion of new players from Latin America and the shattering of historic records previously considered unbreakable. Cal Ripken Jr. sets an amazing record of consecutive games played, helping rekindle the country's love of the game. Barry Bonds, son of the great right fielder Bobby Bonds, signs the most lucrative contract to date in baseball history and thrills San Francisco fans. Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Greg Maddux pitch the Atlanta Braves to the pinnacle. Dazzlingly talented Latino players make an indelible mark on the game. The Yankees, led by manager Joe Torre, return to glory after two decades of disappointment. Bulked up sluggers Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa captivate the nation as they chase Roger Maris' single season home run record. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, more and more players are making life-altering decisions about how far they are willing to go to succeed.

The first episode will see its broadcast premiere on PBS39HD from 8:00pm-10:00pm also on Tuesday, September 28, with an encore airing from 10:00pm-12:00am that same night. The second episode titled "The Bottom Of The Tenth" will air on PBS39HD Wednesday, September 29, with an encore airing that same night from 10:30pm to 1:00am.
