Three-run fifth inning pushes BayBears past Biscuits

Houchins homers in first, drives in three runs in victory

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (August 29, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, evened the series with a 5-4 comeback win over the Montgomery Biscuits Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Trailing 4-2 in the fifth inning, Zach Houchins drove in his third run of the game with a double to slice the Biscuits' lead in half. With one out and runners on second and third, Zach Gibbons reached on a fielding error that brought home two runs.
Mobile's (63-70 overall, 33-31 second half) bullpen did not allow a hit from the fourth inning until the ninth. Greg Mahle (6-0) earned the win with 2 2/3 scoreless, hitless innings of relief. Damien Magnifico got the BayBears out of a jam, getting the final out of the eighth inning with two runners on. Abel De Los Santos got three straight outs after a leadoff double in the ninth to record his fourth save.
Houchins got the scoring started for the BayBears with a two-run homer off Logan Darnell (5-2) in the first inning, snapping an 18-inning scoreless streak. It was his team-high 14th home run of the season.
The Biscuits (75-59, 38-26) responded with a run in the first inning and three runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead. Jake Cronenworth had a multi-hit game, including an RBI double in the second, and he scored a pair of runs.
The BayBears wrap up the five-game road series against Montgomery Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Luis Pena (1-1, 0.87 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty José Mujica (12-8, 2.97 ERA) for the Biscuits.
