After missing out on two early run-scoring opportunities, the Thunder were unable to build momentum on offense, and were shut out by the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Right-hander T.J. Zeuch limited the Thunder (46-35) to five hits over seven scoreless innings, and relievers Kirby Snead and Andrew Case tossed one scoreless inning each for the Fisher Cats (47-33).
Mandy Alvarez and Devyn Bolasky led Trenton with two hits each in the game. The Thunder went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners stranded, including three men in scoring position in their first two innings at the plate.
Thunder starter Trevor Stephan allowed an opposite-field home run to Eduard Pinto leading off the third inning, and later in the inning, Max Pentecost doubled to left-center to score Harold Ramirez from second, but a strong relay throw by second baseman Wendell Rijo cut down Connor Panas attempting to score from first on the play.
Jonathan Davis extended New Hampshire's lead to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly to right field in the fourth, Stephan's final inning of work.
Kaleb Ort tossed two and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief of Stephan. Jordan Foley followed with two and one-third innings, allowing the game's final run in the eighth when back-to-back singles to open the inning eventually gave way to an RBI-bunt single by Gunnar Heidt.
The loss denied the Thunder the opportunity to take first place in the Eastern Division, and dropped the team back to a game and a half behind the first-place Fisher Cats.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Monday night at 7pm against the Fisher Cats. RHP Domingo Acevedo (2-1, 2.73) will start for the Thunder, and LHP Thomas Pannone (0-0, 2.25) will go for New Hampshire. The first 1,025 fans ages six and up will receive a Derby commemorative baseball card set. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
