Thunder Charities awards grants

Eight local nonprofit organizations will benefit

TRENTON, N.J. -- The Trenton Thunder Minor League Baseball team announced today that it has awarded grants to eight locally based nonprofit organizations through the 2012 Trenton Thunder Charities Community Grant Program.

"After a year of fundraising through special events like our 'Trenton Thunder Charities Treasure Hunt' we are thrilled to use the funds to support so many worthwhile organizations," said Patience Purdy, executive director of Trenton Thunder Charities. "It's great to see the money we raised make a direct impact on programs in our local community that desperately need funding."

The goal of the Trenton Thunder Charities Community Grant Program is to support organizations that enhance the educational opportunities and quality of life for children, as well as programs that support the betterment of the local community in general. This year, five of the eight organizations received grants in the full amount that was requested on their application. A total of 28 organizations submitted applications.

The Thunder will host the inaugural Trenton Thunder Hot Stove Dinner & Benefit on Thu, Jan. 31, 2013 at the Trenton Marriott. The event, titled, "Jersey Pinstripes" will be an exciting evening to benefit Trenton Thunder Charities and local Hurricane Sandy Relief Funds. Ticket information & details will be announced soon. Trenton Thunder Charities will present the Second Annual Treasure Hunt Presented By First Choice Bank on Sat, Aug. 10. More details will be announced at a later date.

The Trenton Thunder, the Double A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have donated more than $4.7 million in goods, services and monetary donations to community organizations in its 19 year history. Trenton Thunder Charities is part of the Grand Slam We Care Foundation with its sister team, the Lakewood BlueClaws.

The 2013 Trenton Thunder season will begin on Thu, April 4, at Portland with the home opener slated for Thu, April 11 vs. Richmond. Season tickets and group outings are on sale now by calling 609-394-3300.

The Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, are located in Trenton, N.J., and play in the 12 team Eastern League. The Thunder have drawn more than 7.7 million fans in 19 years, and have won the three major awards that Minor League Baseball teams can win: the Johnson Trophy for the "Nation's Best Franchise" (2005), the Larry MacPhail Trophy for Outstanding Club Promotion (2003) and the Bob Frietas Award for Long-Term Success (1998, given byBaseball America).
