TinCaps outslug Hot Rods, 13-9
The teams combined for 18 hits, eight errors, 19 walks, 23 runners left on base and a man named Burt Reynolds hit a grand slam to finish the scoring.
Already with a 3-0 lead in the third inning, Jedd Gyorko smacked an RBI single. Later in the inning, Williams drilled a bases-loaded double to make it 7-0.
In the fifth, Jason Hagerty drove in a run with a groundout to give the TinCaps an 8-0 lead.
Bowling Green scored five unanswered runs to draw within striking distance, cutting the lead to 8-5 at the end of the seventh inning.
In the top of the eighth, Dean Anna ripped a two-out, two-run single, Hagerty followed with an RBI hit and Nate Freiman roped a two-run double into the left-field corner to make it 13-5.
The Hot Rods bounced back in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases on a pair of walks and an error. Reynolds drilled a grand slam to the lawn seats in left-center to cut it to a 13-9 margin.
RHP Miles Mikolas restored order to the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, just the second perfect frame of the game.
TinCaps LHP Noah Mull (2-0) picked up the win. Bowling Green RHP Yorman Mayora (1-2) took the loss.
Fort Wayne improved to 39-25 in the half, 75-59 for the season. The Hot Rods fell to 26-38 in the second half, 57-76 for the year.
The TinCaps open a three-game road series against the South Bend Silver Hawks (Class-A Arizona Diamondbacks) Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Fort Wayne RHP Matt Jackson (4-1) goes to the hill against Silver Hawks LHP Mike Belfiore (2-10).
