'Topes forced to forfeit following roster flub

This is what we call an oopsie.

Because they added a player off the disabled list to their already full 25-man roster without making a corresponding move, the Albuquerque Isotopes were forced to forfeit their 7-6 win over El Paso in a suspended game that started on July 9 and was forced to end July 10 due to unplayable field conditions, the Pacific Coast League announced Tuesday.

Before the game started on July 9, the Dodgers activated No. 2 prospect Joc Pederson, who hadn't played since June 24 due to a shoulder injury, off the disabled list, putting their active list at 26 players -- one above the limit, per Major League Rule 2(c)(2)(b). They did not take a player off their 25-man roster by first pitch of the ballgame, and Pederson was slotted as the Isotopes' starting center fielder and was placed second in the batting lineup.

The game was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the first inning and resumed the next day. Pederson finished the game 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and a walk, and the Isotopes eventually took the victory on Brian Cavazos-Galvez's walk-off two-run double in the ninth.

The PCL deemed that Pederson was added improperly after the game and announced its ruling that Albuquerque needed to forfeit its win on Tuesday.

The final score will officially go down as a 9-0 Chihuahuas win, although individual and team stats from the original outcome will still count. All pitching outcomes are taken away, however, so Juan Abreu's win for Albuquerque and Dennis O'Grady's hold and Hector Ambriz's blown save and loss for El Paso do not go into the record.
