August 9, 2009
The Los Angeles Angels named lefthanded starting pitcher Alex Torres the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July on Sunday. Torres, 21, was 5-0 with a 2.09 ERA for Class A-Advanced Rancho Cucamonga in July, striking out more than a batter per inning. Torres ended the month with a 16-inning scoreless streak, which was followed by a promotion to Double-A and a win in his first start for Arkansas last Tuesday.

Torres, a 5-foot-10 Venezuelan who signed with the Angels in 2005 as a 17-year-old, was tied for the California League lead in strikeouts at the time of his promotion. He has a career 3.05 ERA in the minor leagues. He will next start for the Travelers at home on Sunday night against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.
