Tourists Come Back to Defeat Gnats 5-2

August 21, 2012
Savannah, GA - The Asheville Tourists used a three-run homerun and solid pitching to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-2 Monday night at Historic Grayon Stadium in the first game of a three-game series. Mets '2012 second-round pick Matt Reynolds extended his hitting streak to seven straight games in the loss.

The Gnats (24-32/65-58) took a 2-0 lead two batters in the bottom of the first inning. 3B Brandon Brown led off with a single, and then SS Matt Reynolds homered off the foul pole in the leftfield corner to put the Gnats up 2-0. His seven-game hitting streak is his longest as a professional.

Asheville (33-24/80-47) had runners aboard in three of the first four innings against starter Alex Panteliodis, only to break through in the fifth. With two outs, two singles followed by a three-run homerun from 3B Sam Mende gave the Tourists a 3-2 lead. Mende finished 2-for-4 with a homer, his 10th of 2012, and a walk.

Panteliodis made it through 5.2 innings before hitting his pitch count with two outs in the sixth. He was charged with his seventh loss of the year.

The Tourists added two unearned runs on a throwing error on Brown in the ninth to complete the game's scoring.

The Savannah offense had opportunities early, but little going late. The Gnats left the bases loaded in the first and fourth innings against the Asheville starter Daniel Winkler. Winkler finished six innings yielding two runs with seven strikeouts and zero walks to earn his 10th win of the year. The Gnats had just one hit in their final five turns at bat.

The Gnats hand the ball to RHP Marcos Camarena (7-4, 3.14) looking to even the three-game series against RHP Ben Alsup (12-5, 3.94) Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Gates to Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm. The radio broadcast, presented by Subway begins on News/Talk 630 WBMQ and online at sandgnats.com at 6:45 pm.
