Mandel pitches shutout; Wheeler nabs first Triple-A victory

Cardinals top prospect Shelby Miller struck out seven and gave up a run on two hits over 5 2/3 innings for his fifth win in six decisions as Memphis beat Albuquerque, 7-1. Steven Hill homered twice, doubled, drove in three runs and scored three times for the Redbirds, while Trent Oeltjen accounted for the Isotopes' offense with his 13th homer.

Astros No. 20 prospect Rudy Owens recorded his first PCL win after yielding two runs on seven hits over six frames in Oklahoma City's 4-3 win at Iowa. Jimmy Paredes homered, doubled and drove in two runs, while Mike Hessman added his PCL-leading 31st homer for the RedHawks. Blake Lalli led the Cubs with two hits and two RBIs.

All nine starters collected a hit as Omaha defeated New Orleans, 7-2. Rey Navarro singled, walked twice, drove in two runs and scored once for the playoff-bound Storm Chasers. Gil Velazquez went 2-for-4 with a pair of walks and two RBIs out of the leadoff spot for the Zephyrs.

Xavier Nady homered twice and drove in four runs to power Fresno to a 6-3 win over Reno. Grizzlies starter Yusmeiro Petit allowed two runs on five hits and struck out seven in seven frames. Aces catcher Konrad Schmidt finished a triple shy of the cycle in a 3-for-4 effort.

D.J. Mitchell gave up three hits and an unearned run over 6 1/3 innings as Tacoma squeaked past Las Vegas, 2-1. Bobby LaFromboise struck out four in 2 2/3 perfect frames to earn his fourth save, while Alex Liddi and Carlos Peguero ripped solo homers for the Rainiers. Kevin Howard went 2-for-3 and scored the 51s' only run.

Eric Farris went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and fell a triple shy of the cycle, leading Nashville to an 11-5 triumph over Round Rock. Caleb Gindl chipped in three hits and also drove in three runs, needing a homer for the cycle for the Sounds. Express first baseman Brad Nelson missed the feat by a triple, going 3-for-3 with two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Cory Riordan struck out six and allowed four hits over six shutout innings to help Colorado Springs best Tucson, 6-1. Rockies No. 5 prospect Tim Wheeler doubled, drove in two runs and scored once at the top of the lineup for the Sky Sox. Matt Clark finished 3-for-4 for the Padres.

Luis Jimenez's three-run homer in the fifth inning proved to be the difference in Salt Lake's 4-2 win at Sacramento. Angels No. 10 prospect Kole Calhoun was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for the Bees, while River Cats right fielder Michael Taylor doubled, singled, walked and drove in a run in a losing effort.

Top Mets prospect Zack Wheeler tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven for his first Triple-A win as Buffalo blanked Rochester, 1-0, in the opener of a doubleheader. No. 14 Mets prospect Matt den Dekker drove in the Bisons' lone run, while Matt Carson doubled twice for the Red Wings.

Matt Carson collected two more doubles and plated three runs as Rochester salvaged a doubleheader split by beating Buffalo, 11-9. Wilkin Ramirez collected four RBIs for the Red Wings, while Matt Tuiasosopo and Zach Lutz drilled two-run homers for the Bisons.

Former IL MVP Russ Canzler fell a triple short of the cycle and drove in two runs to lead Columbus past Indianapolis, 5-3. T.J. McFarland allowed three runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings for the win. Chase d'Arnaud homered for the Indians, who got five solid innings from Rick VandenHurk.

Justin Thomas held Lehigh Valley to two runs on three hits while striking out five over seven innings as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre posted a 6-2 road win. Melky Mesa, Brandon Laird and Kosuke Fukudome each drove in two runs for the Yankees. Hector Luna homered for the IronPigs.

Tony Thomas and Danny Valencia each drove in two runs to help Pawtucket edge Charlotte, 5-4. Ivan De Jesus went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in his debut for the PawSox. White Sox No. 15 prospect Josh Phegley went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the playoff-bound Knights.

Rays No. 5 prospect Tim Beckham and Sean Rodriguez homered to power Durham past Norfolk, 4-3. Rich Thompson went 3-for-4 with a double, three stolen bases and a run scored for the Bulls, who got six shutout innings from Cesar Ramos. Brandon Waring hit a two-run shot for the Tides.

Jeff Mandel tossed a six-hitter for his first Triple-A shutout, striking out four, as Syracuse blanked Gwinnett, 7-0. Sandy Leon went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI for the Chiefs, while Jose Constanza had a pair of hits for the Braves.

Denis Phipps went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and Reds No. 4 prospect Didi Gregorius also slugged a two-run shot in Louisville's 4-3 triumph over Toledo. Tim Gustafson yielded a run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings to get the win, while Tigers No. 3 prospect Casey Crosby surrendered four runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts over six innings for the Mud Hens.
