Twins' Buxton reinjures wrist, to have MRI

Byron Buxton, the consensus top prospect in the Minor Leagues, is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on his left wrist within the next few days after reinjuring it sliding on Thursday, Twins director of Minor League operations Brad Steil told MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger.

Buxton, the top prospect in Minnesota's system and on MLB.com's Top 100 list, missed the start of the 2014 season after spraining the pisotriquetral joint in the wrist diving for a fly ball in Spring Training.

Initially slated to begin the season with Double-A New Britain, the 20-year-old instead was sent back to Class A Advanced Fort Myers when he returned, where the team planned to monitor him until he was deemed ready for the jump to Double-A.

In five games with the Miracle, Buxton hit .150 (3-for-20) with one homer and eight strikeouts. Buxton played through the completion of Thursday's game despite reinjuring his wrist but was scratched from the Fort Myers lineup Friday and has not been back in action since.

The Twins are hopeful the injury is a minor one and will compare this MRI exam to the one taken in Spring Training when he initially injured the wrist, MLB.com said.

The 2012 first-round pick (second overall) hit .334 with 12 homers, 55 stolen bases and a .944 OPS in stops at Class A Cedar Rapids and Fort Myers in 2013.
