Twins' top 2013 pick Stewart placed on DL

Twins No. 4 prospect Kohl Stewart, the team's top pick in the 2013 Draft, was placed on the seven-day disabled list on Friday with a right shoulder impingement.

Stewart, 19, was scratched from his start on July 23 with what Twins director of Minor League operations Brad Steil described as "a little shoulder soreness," according to the Pioneer Press. The Midwest League All-Star was officially shelved on Friday, eight days after his last outing.

"He has a shoulder problem, but I don't think it's a big problem," Twins general manager Terry Ryan told MLB.com. "I think he'll be all right."

Stewart, the No. 4 overall pick in last year's Draft, is 3-5 with a 2.42 ERA in 17 starts this season with Class A Cedar Rapids. The Houston native has struck out 58 and walked 23 in 81 2/3 innings, with even better numbers this month, in which he's 2-1 with a 1.32 ERA in three outings for the Kernels.

With Stewart on the DL, the Twins promoted lefties Stephen Gonsalves and Josue Montanez from Rookie-level Elizabethton.

Stewart last pitched on July 17, when he held Lake County to four hits over five scoreless innings for his third victory. He's allowed just one run in his last two starts spanning 11 innings.

The St. Pius X (Texas) High School product debuted last year with Elizabethton and the Twins' other Rookie-level affiliate in the Gulf Coast League, finishing with a 1.35 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 20 frames combined.

The prized right-hander is the latest top Twins prospect to suffer an injury this year. Byron Buxton, the top-ranked prospect in baseball according to MLB.com, has been limited to just 50 at-bats over 13 games this season due to wrist injuries, while slugging third base prospect Miguel Sano, the Twins' No. 2 prospect, is out for the entire year after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow.

Stewart missed time in 2013 as well with shoulder soreness while pitching in the instructional league. He signed with the Twins in 2013 after receiving a $4.54 million bonus.
