Undefeated Road Streak Ends in 7-3 Loss

June 30, 2011

Williamsport, PA--After winning five straight road games to start the year, the Doubledays' undefeated streak was snapped tonight in a 7-3 loss at Williamsport.

Missed opportunities were the theme of the night, as the Doubledays finished just 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position, stranding 13 men on the bases. They loaded the bases twice with nobody out in the game, once in the first and once in the sixth, and managed just one total run from the two bases loaded situations.

Williamsport struck first by plating two runs in the third inning on a 2 RBI single by Maikel Franco before the Doubledays scored their first run on an RBI triple by Justin Miller in the top of the fourth. The Crosscutters would get that run back in the bottom of the fourth when Witer Jimenez singled in Bob Stumpo from second, putting Williamsport up 3-1.

Auburn answered with a run of their own in the sixth when Williamsport starter Lino Martinez walked in Caleb Ramsey with nobody out. Unfortunately, a call to the bullpen to bring in Hector Neris ended the scoring for the Doubledays as he induced back-to-back infield pop-ups, followed by a ground out to end the inning.

The Crosscutters put two more on the board on a 2 RBI single by Kenny Miramontes in the bottom of the sixth, extending their lead to 5-2.

Once more, the Doubledays would score, plating a run in the top of the eighth when Bryce Ortega and Angelberth Montilla both doubled. But such as the night went, the Crosscutters would answer in the bottom half of the inning.

Auburn reliever Chad Jenkins walked the first two batters in the inning, and both came around to score on a two-out, two-run single by Aaron Altherr. The hit put the proverbial nail in the coffin, and the Crosscutters would go on to a 7-3 victory.

Game two of the series is set for tomorrow night as RHP Manny Rodriguez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the bump for the Doubledays against Williamsport RHP Colin Kleven (0-0, 4.15 ERA). To listen to the game live, tune in to 89.1 FM in Auburn, NY or visit www.auburndoubledays.com.
