Urias, Seager ticketed for big league camp

Anderson also gets non-roster Spring Training invitation from Dodgers
January 9, 2015

What he lacks in years, Julio Urias is making up for in exciting experiences.

The 18-year-old left-hander is bound for another one in a few weeks, as the Dodgers announced on Friday that their top pitching prospect is among 17 non-roster invitees to Spring Training. Corey Seager, the No. 1 overall prospect in the system, is also on that list.

In 2014, Urias pitched a perfect inning in the Futures Game and recorded 109 strikeouts over 87 2/3 frames for Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga en route to winning the Branch Rickey Award as the Dodgers' Minor League Pitcher of the Year. The Mexican southpaw has yet to throw a pitch at the Double-A level, and the organization's player development staff has been careful to limit his innings.

Before he departed for the Padres, former Dodgers vice president of amateur scouting Logan White said that Urias already is capable of competing at the Major League level.

"I do believe he could pitch in the big leagues right now, but we're not going to rush things," White said.

Seager, 21, hit .349 in 118 games between Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Chattanooga last year. The 2012 first-rounder combined for 20 homers and led the system with 97 RBIs.

This will be the first time in big league camp for both Urias and Seager.

Chris Anderson, the team's No. 5 prospect, and Darnell Sweeney, ranked 12th, also received invitations. Anderson, a 22-year-old right-hander, was the 18th overall pick in the 2013 Draft and went 7-7 with a 4.62 ERA in the Cal League in his first full season. Sweeney, a 23-year-old infielder, batted .288 with 14 homers, 57 RBIs and 15 stolen bases for Chattanooga last year.

Other non-roster invitees include recently signed relievers Sergio Santos and David Huff, infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena and outfielders O'Koyea Dickson and Kyle Jensen.

Outfield prospects Joc Pederson and Scott Schebler are on the Dodgers' 40-man roster and also will attend big league camp. The same is true for recent acquisitions Austin Barnes, the 25-year-old catcher who came from the Marlins in the Dee Gordon trade, and Joe Wieland, the 24-year-old right-hander whom the Dodgers acquired in the Matt Kemp deal.
