Vermont Loses 7-4 Friday To Yankees

Lake Monsters Officially Eliminated From Playoff Contention
September 3, 2010
STATEN ISLAND, NY --- Robert Segedin's two-runs single in the bottom of the sixth inning snapped a 4-4 tie as the Staten Island Yankees opened a four-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 7-4 victory in New York-Penn League action Friday night at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

Segedin's two-run single came off Lake Monsters reliever Chad Jenkins (2-7), who allowed three runs on three hits with two walks, a hit batter (his team-record 13th of the season) and one strikeout over three innings. Vermont starter Bobby Hansen was charged with four runs on 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts in four innings.

Both teams put together four straight one-out hits in the first inning as the Lake Monsters took a 3-2 lead. After back-to-back one-out singles from Blake Kelso and Russell Moldenhauer, Ronnie LaBrie had an RBI double and Kevin Keyes a two-run double for a three-run Vermont first. Staten Island responded with three straight one-out singles and a Kelvin De Leon two-run double to cut the deficit to one.

The Yankees took the lead in the second inning with two more runs off Hansen on RBI singles from Kelvin Duran and Shane Brown. Vermont was able to tie the game in the fifth on a Jason Martinson bases loaded infield single and had a chance to plate three more runs in the inning, but Brown made a diving catch in the leftfield corner of a Connor Rowe flyball to keep the game tied.

Matt Jernstad (2-2) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings for the victory, while Thomas Kahnle a scoreless ninth for the save. Cito Culver went 3-for-4 and Jeff Farnham 2-for-2 with two walks, one run and one RBI for Staten Island (33-38), which went 7-for-16 with runners in scoring position while the Lake Monsters were just 3-for-16.

Robbie Ray, who was taken by the Washington Nationals in the 12th round of the 2010 draft, pitched a perfect fifth inning with a groundout and a pair of strikeouts in his professional debut. Moldenhauer was 2-for-5 with two runs, while Kelso and Rowe both had two hits for Vermont (34-37).

The loss combined with a Connecticut 7-6 win at Aberdeen officially eliminates Vermont from the Stedler Division race. The Lake Monsters and Yankees will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 5:00 pm.
