West Tenn rules SL All-Stars

August 30, 2005
Led by two hurlers from the league's stingiest staff, West Tenn placed a league-leading four players on the Southern League's year-end All-Star Team.

Pitchers Ricky Nolasco and Reynel Pinto, along with outfielder Matt Murton and designated hitter Brandon Sing, represented the Diamond Jaxx, who own the best overall record in the SL this season (79-53).

The lefty Nolasco (13-3, 3.01) and right-handed Pinto Reynel (10-3, 2.44) are among the league leaders in ERA and anchor a staff with the lowest ERA in the league at 3.33.

Murton batted .342 with eight homers and 46 RBIs for the Jaxx before getting promoted to the bigs and back to Triple-A Iowa this season. His former teammate Sing is tied (with Birmingham's Chris Young) for the league lead in homers with 25.

Jacksonville (75-57 overall) placed three players on the squad while Montgomery, Birmingham and Carolina each placed two, and Tennessee placed one.

The year-end All-Star Team was announced Tuesday and was voted on by the league's field managers, radio broadcasters and print media.

The SL will announce its 2005 on-field awards - including Most Valuable Player, Most Outstanding Pitcher and Manager of the Year -- on Friday, September 2.
