Wieters powers Tides to third straight win

May 14, 2009
Matt Wieters clubbed two homers to help give Norfolk a 12-3 win over Syracuse Thursday night.

Wieters slugged a solo homer in the first inning to give Norfolk an early lead, then added a three-run shot in the third frame that gave the Tides the lead again after Syracuse had plated three runs in the bottom of the first.

Scott Moore also helped pace Norfolk's 15 hit attack with two hits, including a three-run homer in the sixth inning - his 7th of the season.

Justin Turner also added three hits, while Jolbert Cabrera added two hits and two runs batted in.

Chris Waters (3-2) was the beneficiary of the offensive output, as he worked around a shaky first inning en route to earning his third win of the season. Waters yielded just four hits and two runs in seven innings of work, striking out six.

The Tides will go for the series sweep of the Chiefs on Friday night, with first pitch slated for 7:00 pm. Rich Hill (1-1, 1.35) is scheduled to take the hill for Norfolk.
