Wild anything but for Mariners in AZL Final

Right-hander strikes out career-high 14 in longest outing of season to top Giants
August 31, 2007
Jake Wild fanned a career-high 14 to lead the Mariners to an 8-5 win over the Giants for the one-game Arizona League championship Thursday.

Wild (1-0) scattered four hits over seven innings, including two hits and a walk in the first frame. He settled down after his teammates scored four runs in the bottom of the inning.

"It was a big game and I was trying to slow myself down," Wild said. "Trying to not be too anxious. Those four runs put me in my comfort zone."

The 23-year-old right-hander went on to retire 10 straight batters into the fourth. He gave up a single to Johnny Monell to open the fifth, but downed the next 10 in order.

"The main thing I was concerned with was going 0-1 to every batter," said Wild, who had pitched over five innings only once this season. "If I can get them to go 0-1, I can get them to chase. I was able to locate my pitches and everything was over the plate."

His location was a key point for him as he retired the side on strikeouts in the first and fifth. Wild allowed catcher Israel Nunez to call the pitches.

"I left it up to [Nunez]," Wild said. "He's been catching me, and he knows what I like to do. He was able to recognize the hitters and I didn't have to shake him off once."

Mariners manager Jose Moreno tipped his hat to Wild and his teammates.

"It was a great game by Jake Wild," he said. "San Francisco has a good team, but they couldn't do anything about him. He threw fastballs down the middle, he kept hitters off-balance."

Moreno is in his first year as a manager in the United States after winning two championships in Venezuela.

"These kids deserved to win," he said. "We set the tone from the beginning. We used a lot of base hits. We were bunting and using the hit-and-run. We don't have a big guy who can hit a home run and change the game -- we have to do the little things."

Mario Martinez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI single in the first, and Maximo Mendez singled, doubled, and scored a run for the Mariners.

Giants starter Wilber Bucardo (0-1) gave up five runs on seven hits and struck out one over 3 1/3 frames.

Ramon Corona hit an RBI single in the first and walked and scored in the ninth. Casey Bond singled and scored in the last frame for the Giants.
