FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 15, 2017) - The Fort Myers Miracle (18-20) used eight extra-base hits to defeat the Clearwater Threshers (22-16) 7-3 on Monday night in the series opener. RHP Cody Stashak's (W, 1-3) quality start propelled him to his first win of the season.
Clearwater started the scoring in the top of the first with a double play ball that brought in Zach Coppola. Fort Myers countered half an inning later with Max Murphy's third tater of the season, this one off RHP Jose Taveras (L, 4-2).
In the bottom of the seventh, the Miracle took the lead thanks to Nelson Molina's two-out triple, plating Brian Navarreto. Clearwater answered the back-and-forth battle with a run of their own in the third on Cornelius Randolph's sac fly.
The bottom of the third spelled trouble for Taveras. Bradley Strong's leadoff home run began a stretch of four consecutive extra-base hits. Alex Perez doubled followed by a Chris Paul RBI-single. Zander Wiel drove in Paul with a triple, giving Fort Myers a 5-2 lead.
Stashak finished with three strikeouts and allowed two runs over six innings of work. Jonny Drozd relieved him and yielded a run over two frames. In a 5-3 game in the bottom of the eighth, Navarreto delivered two more tallies with a double to left, providing the 7-3 final.
RHP David Fischer takes the mound for the Miracle on Tuesday night against RHP Franklyn Kilome. First pitch on a 2-for-1 Tuesday is slated for 6:35 PM ET.
