FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 9, 2017) - In a tightly contested battle, the Fort Myers Miracle (1-3) fell 3-2 to the Jupiter Hammerheads (3-1) on Sunday evening.
RHP Keaton Steele (L, 0-1) did not allow a run through four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. A leadoff walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases, when Brian Schales walked to bring home the first run. Zach Sullivan added a fielder's choice RBI to make it a 2-0 game. RHP Felipe Gonzalez (W, 1-0) allowed just two hits without a run over his five innings of work for the Hammerheads.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Miracle brought in a run with a Daniel Kihle RBI-single. Fort Myers then loaded the bases with one out, putting the potential go-ahead run at second base when Jupiter brought in reliever Esmerling De La Rosa. The righty struck out Sean Miller and induced a groundout of Nelson Molina to preserve the 2-1 lead.
Jupiter added a necessary insurance run in the ninth after Dustin Geiger led off with a double. The Miracle grabbed the run back with a two-out RBI-single from Miller, but RHP Steve Farnsworth (Sv, 1) got Molina to ground out to end the game.
Fort Myers hits the road for seven days with three games in Tampa followed by four in Daytona. The Miracle are back at Hammond Stadium on Monday, April 17th to host the Florida Fire Frogs at 6:35 PM ET.
