FORT MYERS, Fla. - Jared Foster collected two hits, his first multi-hit game of the season but the Fort Myers Miracle fell to the Florida Fire Frogs 1-0 Tuesday Night at Hammond Stadium.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Miracle placed runners at second and third with one out when Foster bunted for a hit and Nelson Molina doubled. But Brandon Lopez and Aaron Whitefield went down on strikes to end the threat.
With the game scoreless in the top of the fifth, the Fire Frogs broke through, plating the game's only run. With one out and the bases empty, Fire Frogs Designated Hitter Justin Ellison reached on an error. After stealing second, Ellison was chased home on a ground-rule double to center by Anfernee Seymour.
Then in the ninth inning, the Miracle got a runner to second with one out. But Fire Frogs Center Fielder Cristian Pache made the play of the night - a diving catch in deep center to rob Molina of a game tying hit. Pinch Hitter Mitchell Kranson grounded out to end the game.
Miracle Right-hander Sean Poppen (0-0) was tremendous in his first start of the season. The Virginia Beach native allowed only three hits in four scoreless innings. He walked none and struck out seven. Colton Davis (1-1) followed Poppen and went three innings, allowing one run (unearned) while scattering two hits and striking out four. The final Miracle pitcher of the night, Andrew Vasquez tossed two shut-out innings.
The four-game series continues tomorrow from Fort Myers. The Fire Frogs will send Jeremy Walker (0-0, 4.91) to the mound. The Miracle will counter with Anthony Marzi (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
