JUPITER, Fla. (August 31, 2017) - The Fort Myers Miracle (41-23) and Jupiter Hammerheads (32-32) combined for eight errors as the final one ended the game. A throwing error towards home plate by Zander Wiel allowed Mason Davis to score the winning run in the eleventh, a 3-2 Jupiter win. LHP Lewis Thorpe struck out a career high 11 men in the loss.
Thorpe was dealing all night long, striking out six in a row during innings three through five. With the game scoreless in the fifth, Dalton Wheat singled with two outs followed quickly by a Zach Sullivan RBI-double to plate the game's first run.
The Miracle answered against starter RHP Merandy Gonzalez with a run in the sixth. After a Tanner English leadoff double, Brandon Lopez provided a one-out single to right field to tie the game.
In the bottom of the frame, Junior Arrojo stood at second with two outs when Angel Reyes sent a slow rolling ball to shortstop. Jermaine Palacios made the play, but his throw was low to first, and Chris Paul could not dig it out. The ball scooted into foul territory, allowing Arrojo to score.
In the top of the ninth, the Miracle picked up a run in LHP Ben Holmes' third inning of work. Brandon Lopez walked. Paul and Mitchell Kranson each tried to put down sacrifice bunts, and Holmes committed two separate errors to load the bases with no one out. Wiel then lifted a sac fly to left, scoring Lopez to tie the game. The Miracle were not able to bring another run in, sending the game to the ninth.
RHP Williams Ramirez followed Thorpe's stellar seven innings with two 1-2-3 frames of his own, while LHP José Quijada (W, 5-1) held the Miracle without a hit in the tenth and eleventh.
LHP Andrew Vasquez (L, 3-1) tossed a clean tenth, but a bunt single from Davis started the bottom of the eleventh. After Arrojo walked, Vasquez recorded the next two outs, a strikeout of Colby Lusignan and line drive out to right field from John Silviano. Reyes again dribbled a ball to the left side with the winning run at second. Lopez fielded and threw to first but not in time to record the out. As Davis rounded third, he was caught halfway as the new first baseman Wiel realized it. Zander threw home, but the ball sailed to the backstop, allowing Davis to score to end the game.
LHP Anthony Marzi makes his FSL debut for the Miracle while RHP Ben Meyer on the hill for Jupiter. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM ET.
