San Antonio settled for a split of its four-game series with Corpus Christi following a 6-1 loss Thursday night at Wolff Stadium.
Kyle Lloyd took the ball for the Missions in his first start since a May 13 no-hitter vs. Frisco. The Reigning Texas League Pitcher of the Week did not have the same success Thursday, beginning in the first when he allowed a pair of unearned runs.
An inning later, Lloyd (4-4) fell behind 4-0 when he allowed a two-out, two-RBI single to catcher Garrett Stubbs. In the third, Bobby Boyd's run-scoring groundout pushed the Hooks' lead to 5-0.
The five runs of support were more than enough for Dean Deetz, who tossed seven strong innings of one-run, five hit ball. Deetz (4-1) struck out three against just one walk, throwing 52 of his 87 pitches for strikes. The righty's only mistake was a Nick Schulz solo homer in the sixth. It was Schulz's league-high tying ninth home run of the season.
Corpus Christi capped scoring in the seventh on a Jon Singleton RBI single.
Relievers Albert Minnis and Jacob Dorris each tossed a scoreless frame to cap the Corpus Christi victory.
San Antonio (23-17) begins a crucial four-game series against Midland (21-19) Friday night at Security Bank Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Bryan Rodriguez (0-0, 0.00) will take the ball for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with fellow righty James Naile (1-1, 3.22). San Antonio's South Division lead remains two thanks to Midland's 6-5 loss at Frisco Thursday night.
