Solo homers by Kyle Overstreet and Michael Gettys were just enough for San Antonio in its 2-0 win over Frisco Monday night at Wolff Stadium.
Pitching was on display throughout Monday's series opener. Miguel Diaz got the start for the Missions and was extremely impressive, allowing just one hit and no walks, while striking out five over four innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kyle Overstreet drove in the only run San Antonio would need against righty Richelson Peña (1-2) when his fly ball to left slipped inside the foul pole and onto the berm.
Erik Johnson (1-1) replaced Diaz and kept the impressive Missions pitching run going, fanning three in two perfect innings. San Diego rehabber Matt Strahm worked around a walk and a hit to begin the seventh in keeping the RoughRiders off the board.
Gettys provided insurance in the bottom of the frame when he took Pena's 2-2 pitch deep onto the berm in left. The two dingers were the lone blemishes against Pena, who limited the Missions to just four hits and two walks, while striking out seven over seven innings.
Rowan Wick and Brad Wieck (1st save) each tossed an inning to finish off San Antonio's first shutout of 2018. The five hurlers combined on a three-hitter.
San Antonio (10-7) resumes its four-game series with Frisco (3-14) on $2 Tuesday presented by AARP. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Lefty Logan Allen (2-1, 4.60) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Riders counter with right-hander Ariel Jurado (0-0, 5.19).
