A big night at the plate from Alberth Martinez highlighted San Antonio's 5-3 victory over Corpus Christi Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium.
San Antonio, coming off just their third loss in May on Tuesday, wasted little time getting on the board Wednesday against lefty Kent Emanuel, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on Nick Schulz's RBI single to right. Two innings later, the Missions doubled the lead when Luis Urías scored on a Jamie Ritchie passed ball.
Brett Kennedy, one of the many Mission hurlers having a terrific May, worked well with the early lead. Kennedy (3-2) scattered seven hits over five and a third innings. The right-hander allowed just one run, a J.D. Davis solo homer to lead off the fourth, and fanned five against no walks.
Martinez, who singled in both of his first two at-bats against Emanuel (1-3), came up in a big spot in the sixth. With two runners on, Martinez upped the San Antonio lead to 5-1 when he belted Emanuel's first pitch deep onto the berm in left. It was the fifth dinger of the season for Martinez, who finished 3-for-3 with a walk.
Corpus Christi made things interesting in the eighth against T.J. Weir with a pair of runs courtesy of an Antonio Nunez single and a Kristian Trompiz RBI groundout. Fortunately, for the Missions, Weir navigated out of further trouble.
In the top of the ninth, Trey Wingenter locked up the San Antonio win and notched his third save when he struck out the side.
San Antonio (23-16) concludes its eight-game homestand against Corpus Christi (18-21) Thursday on Mission Mitsubishi Dollar Night presented by News 4 San Antonio. Reigning Texas League Pitcher of the Week Kyle Lloyd (4-3, 3.20) will get the ball for the Missions in his first start since his no-hitter vs. Frisco on May 13. The Hooks will counter with fellow righty Dean Deetz (3-1, 1.30).
