MIssions Fall 1-0 in 12 innings

July 21, 2012

The Midland RockHounds defeated the Missions 1-0 in 12 innings in the opening game of San Antonio's home stand Friday night at Wolff Stadium.

Each team had their chances to score early. The Missions loaded the bases with no outs in the second but Jake Blackwood struck out and Rymer Liriano grounded into an inning ending double play to end the threat. In the top of the fifth Midland also had the bags full but with two outs but RockHounds second baseman Tyler Ladendorf was called out on strikes to stop their rally.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the 12th when Midland right fielder Jeremy Barfield led off the inning with a double and would score the lone run on catcher Beau Taylor's RBI single.

Dean Anna singled to start San Antonio's half of the inning and advanced as far as third base but Rymer Liriano struck out to the end the game.

Missions starter Andrew Werner, who retired the first 11 batters he faced, went six innings, allowed four hits, no runs, walked none and struck out seven.

The second game of the series is tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. as Murphy Smith (5-6, 4.42 ERA) will start for the RockHounds and will be opposed by fellow righty Josh Geer (4-2, 4.41 ERA).

There will also be fireworks following the game presented by Valero.
