Perez Named Pitcher of the Week

Williams Perez receives Southern League's weekly honor

PEARL, MS -- Mississippi Braves RHP Williams Perez was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 18-24. During the week, Perez posted a record of 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA. He gave up just one earned run in 14 innings pitched.

 

In Mobile on August 19, Perez worked six shutout innings and held the BayBears to just two hits while striking out six batters en route to a 9-3 victory for the M-Braves. In Sunday evening's contest against the Barons, Perez faced just two batters over the minimum through eight innings before giving up a run in the ninth. He gave up four hits and struck out six as the Braves defeated Birmingham 7-1.

 

Perez, 23, currently leads the Southern League with a 2.91 ERA. His 1.18 WHIP ranks third among league leaders, and he also has the fifth-best opponent's batting average at .239. For the month of August, Perez is 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA in five starts-his best month of the season. His next-best month was April when he went 2-2 with a 1.32 ERA in five starts.

 

The Venezuela native was selected as a Southern League Mid-Season All-Star earlier this season. Perez was named Pitcher of the Year at High-A Lynchburg last season by the Braves organization. He was signed by the Braves as a non-drafted free agent on January 12, 2009.

The Mississippi Braves baseball team is the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Since making the move from Greenville, SC, in 2005, over 85 M-Braves have gone on to play in the big leagues.
