MOBILE, Ala. (April 9, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, nearly erased a late four-run deficit but could not push across the tying run in a 5-4 loss to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in the series finale Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Trailing 5-1 in the eighth inning, Hutton Moyer hit his third long ball of the series. The three-run blast cut the Pensacola lead to just one.
In the bottom of the ninth, Connor Justus led off with a double and tried to score the tying run on Wade Wass ' single. However, center fielder Gabriel Guerrero, a former BayBear, threw him out at the plate, and Wass advanced to second on the throw. Guerrero then gunned down Wass trying to score on a Zach Gibbons single. Ariel Hernández induced a groundout to earn his first save and seal the victory for Pensacola (2-3).
For the fifth consecutive game, Taylor Ward recorded multiple hits. He went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Dylan Unsworth (0-1) gave up three runs, two earned, and struck out six batters in four innings. Samil De Los Santos was sharp out of the bullpen, tossing two scoreless, hitless innings with four strikeouts.
Wyatt Strahan (1-0) picked up the win in his Double-A debut. He allowed just one first-inning run on three hits in five innings pitched.
