BayBears explode for 12 runs, clinch series victory

Houchins and Daniel go deep, Kipper tosses seven scoreless frames

PEARL, Miss. (April 20, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim surged ahead early and never looked back, exploding for 12 runs on 11 hits in a 12-1 rout of the Mississippi Braves Thursday night at Trustmark Park.

The BayBears (6-8) scored 11 of their 12 runs in the second and fifth innings. Zach Houchins hit a three-run homer to cap off a five-run second and extend his hit streak to 10 games. Andrew Daniel mashed a grand slam to highlight a six-run fifth, and he finished the game with five RBI.

Jordan Kipper (1-1) pitched seven scoreless innings and gave up just four scattered singles to earn his first win of the season. The BayBears shut out Mississippi (7-7) for 8 1/3 innings before Carlos Franco drove in a run with a ninth-inning double.

Braves starter Max Fried (0-2) struggled early on and only lasted three innings. Mobile tagged the southpaw for six runs on six hits. Fried issued four walks and threw three wild pitches. The BayBears recorded a season-high 10 walks in the game.

Thursday marked the first time the BayBears have won consecutive games this month. The victory also clinched the first series victory of the season for Mobile, winning three of the first four over Mississippi this week.

The BayBears wrap up the five-game road series Friday at 7:00 p.m. Right-hander Parker Bridwell (0-0, -.-- ERA) is slated to make the start against righty Mike Soroka (2-0, 0.77 ERA) for Mississippi.
