PENSACOLA, Fla. (July 11, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, erased an early deficit and closed out the series with a 3-2 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Wednesday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Joe Gatto (3-3) earned his third win with a quality start. He allowed one run on four hits in a six-inning start. Shed Long 's RBI double in the first was the only run for Pensacola (44-44 overall, 14-6 second half) until the ninth inning.
With Mobile (48-39, 11-8) leading 3-1, the Blue Wahoos loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth. Chris Okey plated pinch-runner Narciso Crook with a one-out single to left field. However, Zach Gibbons threw out Taylor Sparks at the plate attempting to score the tying run. Matt Custred recorded a strikeout to close out the game and earn his fifth save.
Jack Kruger snapped an 0-for-17 skid with a two-run homer off Seth Varner (4-1) in the fourth inning. Kruger went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.
The BayBears begin a five-game road series against the Jackson Generals Thursday at 6:05 p.m. CDT. Right-handed pitcher Jose Rodriguez (6-7, 5.57 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Taylor Widener (4-5, 2.60 ERA) for the Generals.
