LANCASTER, Calif. - The Nuts fell into another early hole and could not come back, falling to the Lancaster JetHawks, 7-2, Thursday night at The Hangar. The JetHawks scored seven times in the first four innings to down Modesto for a second-straight night.
Lancaster (9-6, 42-43) scored first in the opening inning. With two outs, Colton Welker doubled and Fernandez followed with an RBI single.
That was just the start of a big night for Fernandez. In the third inning, the JetHawks scored four times on six hits. After a Colton Welker RBI single, Fernandez brought home a run with a double. Tyler Nevin capped off the rally with a two-run single. The JetHawks had six-straight hits in the inning.
In the fourth inning, Fernandez came up with two on and two out. He ripped a double to plate both men on base, giving Lancaster a 7-1 lead. Fernandez finished the night 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI.
Brandon Gold (6-5) gave up just two runs in six innings for Lancaster to earn the win. Modesto's Darren McCaughan (4-6) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits in six innings.
Modesto (4-11, 34-51) got scoreless innings from Jack Anderson and Wyatt Mills, who combined to throw just 17 pitches in two frames. Anthony Jimenez led the way offensively with two doubles and an RBI.
The Nuts try to avoid a series defeat in the third of a five-game series Friday night. Ashton Goudeau (0-0) makes his Modesto debut against Lancaster lefty Ty Culbreth (4-3).
