Modesto, CA. - Anthony Jimenez flared the walk-off RBI single into center field to give the Modesto Nuts a 1-0 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.
In the ninth, Bryson Brigman started the rally with a check-swing single into right. Manny Pazos tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt against Rawhide (31-29) reliever Robby Sexton (L, 0-2). On the bunt back to the mound, Sexton fielded and fired wide to second. The throwing error allowed Brigman to reach second safely.
Jimenez was the next batter and pulled back a bunt attempt to slice the game-winning single into center, helping the Nuts (26-34) avoid their first sweep of the season.
Darren McCaughan was outstanding in his return from a spot start in AAA-Tacoma. The righty tossed seven shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.82. He struck out five, walked one and surrendered just five hits.
Riley Smith heaved six scoreless innings in his start for the Rawhide. The righty struck out eight and walked three.
Seth Elledge (W, 3-0) worked the top of the ninth and maneuvered around a one-out walk.
