Modesto, CA. - Three errors cost the Modesto Nuts in their 3-2 loss against the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino on Wednesday night at John Thurman Field.
The loss is the Nuts' (6-14) fifth straight and they will need a win on Thursday night to avoid a sweep against the 66ers (10-10).
Nuts starter Darren McCaughan (L, 0-3) worked into the sixth inning with four strikeouts and no walks. In the second inning, after two quick outs, Bryson Brigman misplayed a ball at shortstop to allow Julian Leon to reach. Jordan Zimmerman moved him to third with a single before Brandon Sandoval drove him in with a RBI single to get the 66ers on the board first.
The Nuts bounced back and took the lead in the bottom of the second when Donnie Walton crushed a two-run homer over the right field wall against 66ers starter Erik Manoah. The righty worked four innings and walked five but allowed just two runs on two hits.
In the fifth, the 66ers tied the game against McCaughan. Brandon Sandoval reached on a throwing error by Brigman in the fifth inning. He came into score on Luis Rengifo's RBI single.
In the sixth, Kevin Williams banged a one-out triple off the center field wall which knocked McCaughan out of the game. Jonah Todd flared the go-ahead RBI single into left to give the 66ers the lead for good.
In the ninth, the Nuts put the tying and winning runs in scoring position with two outs, by Tyler Stevens got Evan White to groundout to end the game.
