The Modesto Nuts will honor Modesto Police Officer Juan Arroyo on Opening Night at John Thurman Field. Arroyo, a member of MPD for over five years, suffered severe injuries while responding to a call of a vehicle fleeing the California Highway Patrol on January 16th. Despite several broken bones, Arroyo is expected to make a complete recovery. Just three months after the incident, Arroyo will throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the season on Thursday, April 12th.
In addition to throwing out the first pitch, the Modesto Nuts have created the Juan Arroyo Perseverance Award. The award will go to one Nuts player annually that shows grit, determination, perseverance and dedication to the Modesto community.
"Juan Arroyo was a former game-day employee of the organization," said Mike Gorrasi, Executive Vice President of the Modesto Nuts. "Even as a teenager, he showed the traits that would help him reach his goal of working in law enforcement. Juan was a great employee who was well-liked by his peers and supervisors. I was excited when he joined the Modesto Police Department five years ago and was heartbroken when I heard of his injuries. In the three months since his injuries, he has maintained the same positive demeanor and shown the perseverance and grit to be able to join us on Opening Night."
"I'm honored to have an award named after me by the Modesto Nuts," said Arroyo. "My time at the Modesto Nuts taught me the importance of customer service and making a positive impact on every customer which I have applied to my career. I am excited about the meaning behind the Juan Arroyo Perseverance Award."
The Modesto Nuts home opener is scheduled for Thursday, April 12th at John Thurman Field. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with pre-game festivities including presentation of 2017 California League championship rings and the first pitch by Juan Arroyo will begin at approximately 6:25 p.m. A post-game fireworks show presented by Ambeck Mortgage will follow the game.
