Rancho Cucamonga, CA. - With six runs in the final two innings, the Modesto Nuts came from behind to defeat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 8-6, winning the three-game series at LoanMart Field on Monday afternoon.
Quakes (59-42; 24-8) starter Dustin May authored a terrific start working into the eighth inning but was taken out after a two-out walk. Connor Strain (L, 0-2) surrendered an infield single to Kevin Santa putting two runners aboard for Gareth Morgan. Morgan tied the game when he crushed a two-out, three-run homer over the right-field wall for his career-high-tying 17th home run of the year.
After Seth Elledge (W, 5-1) kept the game tied by working a quiet eighth, the Nuts took the lead in the ninth. The Nuts loaded the bases with one out. Bryson Brigman bounced a perfectly placed single into left bringing home two runs to break the ninth-inning tie. Kevin Santa added a RBI single in the inning as well.
Elledge allowed one run in the ninth but was able to preserve the lead and give the Nuts their second straight victory.
Ljay Newsome started for the Nuts and surrendered a pair of two-run home runs. Overall, the Nuts righty tossed five innings allowing five runs on eight hits.
