Visalia, CA. - After taking an early lead, the Modesto Nuts opened up the opener of a three-game series with the Visalia Rawhide with a five-run eighth on their way to a 8-4 win on Friday night at Recreation Park.
Reggie McClain (W, 4-10) put up one his best starts this year for the Nuts (50-68; 20-28). Two straight two-out singles in the second inning led to the only run against the Nuts righty. McClain racked up six K's in the first three innings on his way to a season-high nine strikeouts over six innings with just one walk and one hit allowed.
The Nuts offense got on the board in the second inning without getting the ball out of the infield against Rawhide (57-61; 20-28) starter Cole Stapler (L, 0-4). After a pair of infield singles started the inning, Luis Liberato laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Manny Pazos drove in the first run for the Nuts when he hit a slow roller to short. Jazz Chisholm tried to bare hand the ball but could not snag it cleanly allowing the run to score leaving the bases loaded. Jack Larsen brought in the second run when he grounded into a doubleplay.
Jack Larsen drove in the first of his three runs with a RBI fielder's choice in the fourth.
The Nuts opened things up in the eighth. Evan White and Nick Zammarelli started the inning with a single and a double. Liberato walked to load the bases before Pazos drove in his second run of the day with a RBI single. Larsen followed and drove home two with a single. Jordan Cowan, in his return to the Cal League after injury, plated two more runs with another single.
13 of the Nuts 14 hits were singles.
