Modesto, CA. - Three errors helped the Modesto Nuts secure a 4-1 win against the Inland Empire 66ers on Friday night at John Thurman Field.
Each team tallied unearned runs in the first two innings and the game remained tied until the seventh.
With Simon Mathews (L, 4-4) on the mound for the 66ers (63-61; 30-24) Anthony Jimenez singled and moved to second when Jack Larsen walked. With Manny Pazos at the plate, Jimenez took third on a ball that barely kicked away from the catcher Franklin Navarro. Pazos hit a shot to third that Richie Fecteau could not field cleanly allowing Jimenez to score and Pazos to reach on the error. It was the only earned run of the game.
Beau Branton followed and hit a groundball to Fecteau again. Fecteau fired to second to try and start a double play but his throw was wide allowing Larsen to score and Pazos to go to third. Kevin Santa brought in the third run of the seventh with a RBI fielder's choice.
Darren McCaughan (W, 7-9) was great in his start for the Nuts (52-72; 22-32). In the first inning, Torii Hunter Jr. Jr. reached on a fielding error. He scored on a sac fly. That was the only run McCaughan surrendered. The Nuts righty worked six innings allowing just the one unearned run while striking out eight and walking one.
David Ellingson (S, 1/2) worked around two singles in the ninth to secure the Nuts' second straight win.
