Stockton, CA. - Early two-out knocks were enough to support Nick Wells in the Modesto Nuts' 4-1 win over the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark on Tuesday night.
The win brings the Nuts (45-64; 15-24) just three games back of the Ports (62-47; 18-21) for first place.
In the first, Xavier Altamirano (L, 3-3) recorded the first two outs of the game before Evan White and Nick Zammarelli connected on back-to-back singles. Beau Branton put the Nuts in front with a bloop RBI knock. The Nuts followed a similar formula in the second inning. After two quick outs Manny Pazos doubled before he scored when Anthony Jimenez singled him home.
Nick Wells (W, 3-3) did not record a perfect inning as he worked into the seventh. He worked around a leadoff baserunner in each of his first five innings. In the seventh, he allowed a one-out double that knocked him out of the game. That run would later score. Wells went 6 1/3 and was charged with one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Nuts added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth while Collin Kober (S, 1/1) heaved a perfect four-out save with two strikeouts.
The Nuts and Ports meet in the middle affair of this three-game set on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC by clicking HERE.
