San Jose, CA. - Five runs in the ninth led to a 9-8, walk-off loss for the Modesto Nuts against the San Jose Giants on Friday night at Municipal Stadium.
Leading by four going into the bottom of the ninth, Nuts' (6-10) reliever Michael Koval (L, 0-1) retired the first batter he faced before hitting the second batter. Koval gave up back-to-back singles before walking Gio Brusa. Wander Franco followed and drove in two with a single. Brandon Van Horn added another RBI single to tie the game before Matt Winn walked to load the bases. Johneshwy Fargas flew out to right but it was not deep enough to bring in the winning run from third. Bryce Johnson, who started the inning by grounding out, came up next and he was hit by the pitch to give the Giants (9-7) the walk-off win.
Nick Zamarelli helped the Nuts open an early lead against Giants starter Melvin Adon. Zammarelli smacked a two-out, two-run single in the first inning. In the third, he blasted a two-out two-run homer. He finished 3-for-5 with four RBI.
Randy Bell worked 5 1/3 innings for the Nuts. He left the game with a chance to win it despite giving up eleven hit. Bell surrendered four runs with five strikeouts and no walks.
