Modesto, CA. - A three-run comeback secured a series victory for the Modesto Nuts after a 5-4 win against the San Jose Giants on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.
Down by two entering the seventh, Carlos Sano walked two batters. Gareth Morgan smacked a RBI single to score Nick Zammarelli. Peter Lannoo (L, 0-1) followed out of the bullpen and a bunt single by Garrett Kennedy loaded the bases. After Kevin Santa struck out, Bryson Brigman hit a groundball to third. The Giants (26-21) tried to turn a double play but Brigman beat it out to keep the inning alive and earn the game-tying RBI.
In the eighth, Evan White lifted a bloop into shallow left. Johneshwy Fargas slid to try and make the play but was unable to make the catch as White hustled into second with a double. He moved to third when Kyle Lewis rolled a groundball to short. Lewis beat out the grounder and the throw got by the first baseman allowing White to reach third. Zammarelli delivered the game-winning RBI single to score White and give the Nuts (21-26) a series-clinching victory.
Wyatt Mills (W, 3-0) entered the game with two outs and two runners on in the top of the eighth. He induced a fly out to strand the two runners. He then retired the side in order in the ninth.
Ljay Newsome started for the Nuts and worked six innings allowing ten hits leading to four runs with four strikeouts and no walks.
