BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Biscuits (51-45) fought hard but came up short, falling to the Birmingham Barons (52-44), 2-1, in Tuesday night’s series opener at Regions Field. The Biscuits are now in third place in the Double-A South with 23 games to play.

Johan Dominguez (1-0) started on the mound for the Barons, and the right-hander allowed just a single to Jonathan Aranda in a scoreless top of the first, striking out Ruben Cardenas. Biscuits starting pitcher Jack Labosky (0-4) struck out a better of his own in the bottom of the first, but also surrendered a solo home run to Yolbert Sanchez, who made it 1-0 Barons early.

Blake Hunt ripped a two-out double down the right field line in the top of the second, and Cal Stevenson brought home the backstop with an RBI-single to even the issue at 1-1. The Biscuits had runners at the corners with two outs in the top of the fourth, and Hunt drilled a deep fly ball into the right-center field gap, but Barons center fielder Yoelqui Cespedes made an impressive running catch to save at least a run.

Labosky worked his first one-two-three inning of the night in the fourth and kept the game tied at one. The righty struck out two more in the bottom of the fifth to run his total to five on the night, but also served up a solo home run to Craig Dedelow, who hooked it just inside the right field foul pole to hand the Barons the lead back at 2-1.

Joel Peguero worked a scoreless sixth and seventh, and Ivan Pelaez a scoreless eighth. Luis Ledo pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to secure a two-inning save, and the victory, for the Barons.

The Biscuits will try to bounce back on Wednesday night when Jayden Murray (1-1) clashes with Emilio Vargas (6-1) at 7:05 PM CT.
