The Montgomery Biscuits (79-60) swept a doubleheader with 11-2 and 4-0 victories over the Mobile BayBears (65-70) on Sunday evening. The wins mark the fourth and fifth consecutive victories for the Biscuits as the regular season draws to a close on Monday.
Game One:
The Biscuits plated posted a crooked number in four of their seven innings at the plate to work their way to an 11-2 victory. Every Biscuit recorded at least one base hit in the win.
The two sides traded runs in the first inning before the game turned in Montgomery's favor. Mike Brosseau brought home Dalton Kelly with a two-out single in the top of the first, and Brendon Sanger plated Zach Gibbons with two outs with a single of his own in the bottom half of the frame.
The Biscuits took the lead for good in the second thanks to a two-out two-run single off the bat of Nick Solak. The second baseman also added a pair of hits and runs to his stat line in the later stanzas (along with a knock in game two), bringing his league-leading totals to 133 hits and 90 runs scored.
Montgomery added four runs in the fifth with a Brosseau sacrifice fly and Jesús Sánchez single. Nathan Lukes then belted a two-run home run to right off starter RHP Jesus Castillo (L, 9-5) to blow the game open 7-1, his sixth of the year.
Brosseau added his own two-run single in the sixth to complete his fourth 4-RBI+ game of the year, while Lucius Fox socked his first career Double-A home run in the seventh to make it 11-2.
RHP Sam McWilliams (W, 6-7) surrendered just one run over four innings to earn the win. The loss for Mobile eliminated the BayBears from playoff contention on the second-to-last day of the season.
Game Two:
RHP Benton Moss (W, 8-5) needed just 56 pitches to work through five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. The leadoff infield single Moss yielded to Brendon Sanger in the top of the second was the lone knock for the BayBears in Montgomery's 4-0 Game Two win to seal a doubleheader sweep.
The Biscuits brought in all four of their runs in the top of the fourth inning. RHP Matt Ball (L, 1-3) faced nine batters in the frame and walked four of them. After issuing three free passes to load the bases, David Rodríguez smacked a laser single back up the middle to plate the game's first two runs. Miles Mastrobuoni then drove in Nathan Lukes with a single of his own. Ball's fourth walk came to Dalton Kelly with the bags full yet again to provide the 4-0 final.
RHP Yoel Espinal struck out five BayBears over the final two innings to seal the win.
The Biscuits wrap up the regular season on Monday afternoon at 12:05 PM CT against Mobile. It will be a bullpen day for Montgomery pitching, while Mobile sends LHP Patrick Sandoval (1-0, 1.23) to the mound.
Once the regular season ends on Monday, the Biscuits will have an off-day on Tuesday, and will then head to Jackson, Tennessee to take on the Jackson Generals in Games 1 and 2 of the North Division Series next Wednesday, September 5 and Thursday, September 6, before returning to Riverwalk Stadium for Game 3 on Friday, September 7.
