MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Biscuits (66-53) defeated the Birmingham Barons (56-62), 7-3, on Sunday at Riverwalk Stadium. Three home runs powered Montgomery's offense, including a two-run blast by Danny De La Calle, and helped the Biscuits to a five-game lead in the Southern League North Division.
Birmingham scored first on Danny Mendick drawing a walk with the bases loaded in the first.
However, the Biscuits stormed back in the third inning against Birmingham starter Bernardo Flores (2-4). Montgomery posted two runs in the frame, both of which came on De La Calle's second home run of the season.
The Butter and Blue added two more scores during the following inning. Nick Solak hit his fifteenth home run to start off the fourth followed by David Rodríguez belting his second home run in two days.
Despite the 4-1 lead being dwindled -- thanks to a bases-loaded walk surrendered to Alex Call as well as a fielders' choice -- Montgomery's bullpen rectified its struggles.
Matt Krook (3-2) came on for the Biscuits in the sixth and spun two scoreless innings. In the seventh, Lucius Fox plated an insurance run, scoring the Biscuits' fifth run on a two-out RBI-single. Brett Sullivan also drove home two on an RBI-single later in the attack.
On the mound, Mike Broadway continued to keep Birmingham off the board, spinning a hitless eighth. Yoel Espinal set down the Barons in the ninth, stranding runners on the corners with no outs by striking out the side.
Montgomery begins a six-game road trip against the Jackson Generals on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. The Biscuits are scheduled to offer Brock Burke (3-1) while the Generals have yet to announce a starting pitcher.
The Biscuits return home on August 19 for a ten-game homestand to close out the regular season. Montgomery welcomes the Chattanooga Lookouts for five games, which includes Alabama State v. Tuskegee Night on T-Shirt Thursday on August 23. The Tennessee Smokies come into the Capital City for Troy University and Community Night with MAX Fireworks on August 24.
