KODAK, Ten. - Rene Pinto recorded his first three-hit game of the season and the lifted the Biscuits (46-27) to a 5-2 win over the Tennessee Smokies (34-38) on Saturday night at Smokies Stadium.
Paul Campbell (2-0) made his third Double-A start a third-straight quality outing for the Butter and Blue, but the right-hander would fall behind in the third inning after a hustle RBI-double by Smokies center fielder Connor Myers. On the other side, Alex Lange, who was making his Double-A debut for the Smokies, frustrated the Biscuits over his first four shutout innings and preserved the 1-0 lead.
Lange would walk Brett Sullivan as the first batter in the fifth, and then fell behind Robbie Tenerowicz, 3-0, before serving up a laser beam of a two-run homer to left-center field to the first baseman that put Montgomery ahead, 2-1. The two-run shot was Tenerowicz's third of the season and first in almost two months.
Jhonny Pereda would tie the game at two in the sixth with a two-out RBI single following a two-out double by P.J. Higgins. Tommy Nance (2-2) then entered the game for Lange in the seventh, and hit Tenerowicz with his first offering. David Rodríguez then singled to right, putting runners as the corners, before Pinto stepped up and punched an RBI-single into right field that put the Biscuits ahead for good.
Pinto wasn't done though, because in the ninth, the Maracay, Venezuela native climbed in and hammered a two-run home run that traveled 409 feet off the scoreboard in left, and made it a 5-2 game. Pinto finished a triple shy of the cycle, and caught Dalton Moats and Phoenix Sanders, who closed things out from the seventh inning on.
The Biscuits will try to win yet another series on Sunday when Kenny Rosenberg (6-1) takes on Thomas Hatch (4-6) at 4:30 PM CT.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium for a Triple Play Tuesday on June 25 when the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp will be in town for the first time this year. The series will also include Military Wednesday on June 26; Red Tails Night featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway on Thursday, June 27; Family Faith Night and MAX Fireworks on Friday, June 28; and Superhero Night and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, June 29.
