MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In what was their first game since Tuesday, the Biscuits (61-55) battled some more rain, but swept the Birmingham Barons (62-55) in a doubleheader, winning game one, 4-3, and taking game two, 9-6, on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The Biscuits are now a half-game behind the Barons for the final playoff spot in the Double-A South with three games to play in the regular season.

After an hour-and-20-minute rain delay, Miller Hogan made his fourth start of the season for the Biscuits, and the right-hander allowed a double to Jose Rodriguez, a single to Yolbert Sanchez, and finally an RBI-fielder’s choice to Tyler Neslony that made it 1-0 Barons in the top of the first.

Birmingham starter Johan Dominguez worked a one-two-three bottom of the first, striking out a pair in Jonathan Aranda and Ford Proctor. Yoelqui Cespedes homered to left-center off Hogan’s first pitch of the top of the second inning to make it a 2-0 game. Dominguez struck out another batter in a one-two-three bottom of the second.

Dominguez allowed a single to Michael Smith in the bottom of the third, but still struck out the side to run his total to six. Neslony hammered a solo home run off the batter’s eye in straightaway center to make it 3-0 Birmingham in the top of the fourth. Aranda led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple before Proctor brought the first baseman home with a sac fly to make it 3-1.

Proctor homered to left to make it a 3-2 game in the bottom of the sixth as Joel Peguero (4-8) worked three scoreless innings out of the bullpen in relief of Hogan. Cal Stevenson led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single, and then Connor Hollis doubled down the left field line. Niko Hulsizer walked to load the bases, and then Jim Haley lined an RBI-single to right off Caleb Freeman (0-1) to tie the game at three. After a 4-2 groundout by Michael Smith, Xavier Edwards hit an RBI-single on a flare to left for the Biscuits eighth walk-off win of the season.

Alex Valverde started game two of the doubleheader for the Biscuits, and the righty struck out one in a scoreless top of the first. Edwards doubled and Aranda singled to begin the bottom of the first, and then Proctor knocked in the game’s first run on a sac fly to make it 1-0 Biscuits.

The Barons would respond with an RBI-single by Xavier Fernandez and a sac fly by Mitch Roman to make it 2-1 Birmingham in the top of the second. The Biscuits loaded the bases with two outs but could not score in the bottom of the second against Barons starter Davis Martin (1-2).

Every Biscuit in the starting lineup reached base in the bottom of the third as the Butter and Blue put up a five-spot on Martin and Declan Cronin to make it a 6-2 game. The Biscuits got an RBI-single from Stevenson, an RBI-triple from Hollis, an RBI-single from Michael Smith, and the other two runs on a wild pitch and an error by the Barons second baseman Roman.

Neslony launched his second home run of the day, this one a three-run shot off Valverde in the top of the fifth, to make it a 7-5 contest. Proctor responded with a two-run blast to left-center in the bottom of the fifth to increase the Biscuit lead back to four at 9-5. Neslony added another RBI on a double in the ninth, but Tanner Dodson got Craig Dedelow to ground out to second to end the game, and hand the Biscuits their first doubleheader victory of the season.

The Biscuits will try to make it six-straight wins on Military Appreciation Night with MAX Fireworks on Saturday when Jack Labosky (1-4) takes on Blake Battenfield (7-7) and the Barons at 6:05 PM CT.

The series and regular season wraps up with Lil' Crumbs Kids Club presented by Go Fish Alabama with a Poster Giveaway & Bark in the Park on Sunday, September 19.
